About the event

Talking to our kids about hard things is one of the most important things we can do as parents. And one of the hardest.

Whether it is explaining why a family member had to move away, answering questions about something scary they saw on the news, navigating a divorce or loss, or helping them make sense of racism, discrimination, or financial stress, these conversations matter. And most of us were never taught how to have them.

On May 12th, the Latino Mental Health Association of New Jersey is bringing together a panel of licensed mental health therapists with years of clinical experience working with children and adolescents.

Whether you are a parent looking for guidance or a professional who works with kids and families, this conversation will offer practical, expert insight you can apply right away. Together, our panelists will walk us through what to look for at every age, how to start the conversation, and how to stay connected to kids even when we do not have all the answers.

Meet Our Panelists:

Christine Valentine, LCSW, RPT specializes in working with our littlest ones. She will speak to parents of preschool and early childhood aged children.

Vanessa De Jesus Guzman, LPC, NCC specializes in working with school aged children and tweens. She will speak to parents navigating the elementary and middle school years.

Dina Araujo, LPC, NCC specializes in working with adolescents. She will speak to parents of high schoolers and teens.

Topics will include how to talk to your children about:

  • Immigration and family separation

  • Loss, grief, and death

  • Racism and discrimination

  • Divorce and family change

  • Financial stress at home

  • Mental health, yours and theirs

  • Scary news events and world uncertainty

Following the panel, we will open the floor for a live question and answer period. Bring your questions. This is a space where nothing is off the table.

This event is free, virtual, and open to all parents, caregivers, and professionals who work with children and families. No perfect parenting required.
